Hidden behind bushes, a bench built into the rock wall
The Dream Sanctuary
Charmingly beautiful, somewhat removed from the main path, in the shadow of the trees lies the so-called Sanctuary of Dreams. This simple bench was part of the original structures built at the point of the Ermitage's foundation in 1785.
It is not a viewing point, instead it is an area of contemplative retreat, of peace and of philosophical thoughts. It is painted as a gently melancholic scene. It is a clear contrast to the Carousel Place, the sociability followed by the deliberate exclusion of the outside world, and the opportunity of your soul to enjoy yourself (Hirschfeld).
