The Gleyre Inscription

The inscription reads: "G. Ch. Gleyre peintre a visité l'ermitage 24 août 1873" (The painter G. Ch. Gleyre visited the Ermitage on the 24th of August 1873).

G. Ch. Gleyre (1806 - 1874) was a French painter and renowned teacher. Among some of the students to study in his studio were Albert Anker, Claude Monet, Pierre August Renoir and James MacNeill Whistler.
